We are witnessing every day the effects of these global changes: sea level rising, extreme weather conditions, and the increase of natural disasters (e.g. flooding, hurricanes, etc.). Architects, as both members of a community and designers of living spaces, are called to provide proper responses to the challenge of designing buildings for extreme conditions. In this unit, we promote the development of architectural projects that are responsive to a wide range of physical, conceptual, and social extremes. Under the titles of “The Moving Body” and “The Sensing Body,” the projects’ aims included gaining skills in dealing with human scale; a basic understanding of ergonomics; and knowledge in the ways by which human senses are involved in the body’s interaction with space. The inclusion of a hypothetical site in the final project enabled the students to explore the multiplicity of the variables that are involved in design thinking.

Course Name: Arch3310 - Architectural Studio III

Project Name: “Smyrna Visitor’s Centre”

Coordinator: Assist. Most of the people in societies have limited access for initiation of research and design process. These activities have not yet reached the rest of the communities at a desired level. Especially, local communities don't have enough opportunities to practice research and design on innovative ideas. However, nowadays, local communities can rapidly adapt new types of living conditions in their built environment. These transformations can regulate their social, cultural, economic and environmental needs of their communities. Architectural design can consider these new approaches as a challenge and provide spatial organizations for any new trends, health, education, research, and lifestyle. In Worldwide, many researches have been discussing the advantages and disadvantages of community living. At the moment, new research and design developments are in action at isolated areas in certain local regions. For fast spread of research and design developments to the communities, local residents need to gain training and experiences near their living areas. Third year students are required to design a building organization that answers the needs of the chosen local communities. Creative Community Centre (ARCH 3320) and Youth Learning Centre (ARCH 3310) projects have developed design solutions to trigger local communities’ social, cultural, economical and environmental conditions. Therefore, the aim of the course is also to provide a link between the visual repertoire of contemporary architectural practices and textual repertoire of contemporary architectural theories. Within this scope, for the midterm submission in the fall term of 2019-2020 academic year, the aim was to make a poster with analytic infographics, diagrams, and collages to analyze and comprehend the relationships between space/building and movie scenario in which it takes a role. The basic criticism related to the social and architectural contexts that drive the students to choose the film and the related space/building leads to the analyses.

Course Name: ARCH 4160 - Spatiality and the Arts

Project Name: “Synopsis”

Instructors: Assist. challenging world. Regardless cultural, social, or political backgrounds, global warming and climate crisis are now part of the daily lives of any community in this planet. Studio projects in this unit explored the technical arguments and design settings of an architecture shaped by extreme environments, complex structures, social inequalities, and natural/man-made disasters.

Course Name: ARCH 4353 Kinetic Architecture

Project Name: Kinetic Structures

Instructors: Assist. Bornova Küçükpark is a neighborhood which reflects this type of diversity from the university students to elderly people and people from different backgrounds, cultures, and ethnicity. In this transcript, we explored the relationship between the semi-public spaces of Bornova Küçükpark and the social interactions of different people. And we questioned whether it is the public/semi-public spaces that create this encounter, or vice versa, the different groups of people. Moreover, how the space changes/appropriates according to this diversity covered another focus-question. Encounter, which is defined as “unplanned and unexpected meeting,” was the core of our exploration. As it is also discussed within the literature, for social cohesion and sense of belonging semi-public spaces have a bigger role than public spaces with more fleeting encounters. Therefore, we concentrated mainly on these small-scale/micro-public spaces between the private and public worlds and tried to find answers to how encounters occur, where, and between whom. Why were these banal encounters between strangers important in the neighborhood? There were two way-findings in this exploration. One concentrated on the personas of people, different characters, and tried to find out the needs and encounter-places of these people. The latter traced the current micro-public spaces of Küçükpark and tried to understand the encounters there.
